NMLA seeks Domestic Violence Staff Attorney for Albuquerque Office



New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) has an opening for a Domestic Violence Staff Attorney based in the Albuquerque Office.


The Domestic Violence Staff Attorney will work to assist clients with Orders of Protection and other related cases affecting the personal safety and economic security of victims. The attorney also will be a key member of NMLA’s statewide family law practice group.


Qualifications: The attorney will be responsible for directly representing victims referred to NMLA.  The attorney will also work with other advocacy agencies and organizations in New Mexico to further protections of victims in a collaborative environment. The applicant should be a self-starter, require limited supervision, and possess excellent writing and communication skills and be committed to serving the needs of domestic violence victims. 


Requirements: A passion to represent victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking is highly preferred. This position also requires extensive courtroom time.  Must be licensed in New Mexico, or eligible for licensing by reciprocity, limited legal aid providers licensing, or by sitting for the next available New Mexico bar examination. Must be willing and able to travel. Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate and co-counsel with staff located in multiple offices. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.  This position is part of a two-person grand funded program meant to assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking.  The attorney will staff a legal helpline phone and assist their colleagues with meeting all grant requirements including quarterly report writing.
