New Mexico Legal Aid seeks Paralegal: Deadline August 31st

New Mexico Legal Aid is seeking one Paralegal to conduct intake, make referrals, and provide legal information to callers, and potentially provide advice to pro se tenants. Services will be conducted by telephone contact.  All potential recipients of assistance will call an L&T helpline.

The position will be in the Albuquerque office of NMLA and will be devoted to City of Albuquerque residents. The Helpline number will be published on City of Albuquerque information services and at the City of Albuquerque court.  Landlords who call the helpline will receive information and referral. Tenants who call will be screened for financial and residential eligibility.  If not eligible they will receive referrals and information.  If eligible they will be screened for potential legal assistance, and if within priorities they will receive advice. Paralegals with sufficient experience may provide advice under the supervision of the NMLA Director of Intake or another designated attorney.

NMLA handles a wide range of creative, challenging, and complex work. We look for highly motivated candidates who are passionate about justice and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client communities, including development of effective team strategies to handle complex advocacy and extended representation cases.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree and at least three years’ experience as a Paralegal is preferred but will consider exceptionally well qualified entry level candidates with Associate’s Degree.  Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate with staff located in multiple offices. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community served by NMLA.  Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
